Sleepers,
We've got a few things to update with today. Number one is shipping times, then we'll cover production, and our upcoming Science of Sleep sleep researcher Q&A session next week.
Shipping Update
This is the hard part of our update. TLDR: due to a COVID shutdown at our blackout factory and global shipping container issues we're delayed on our estimated shipping timeline from October 2021 to December 2021.
We understand that many of you will feel let down by this message and we are truly sorry for upsetting you. We did everything to try to get our products here to start shipping in October, however recent events have made this impossible.
Our current status is that we are in production now. We prioritized quality in our supply chain, but that also opened us up to more potential risk, especially with delays because of COVID (multiple factories and shipping involved). We included these considerations when we originally estimated an October delivery date, but unfortunately, we were not right about the extent of the possible delays due to the pandemic and issues with shipping containers getting worse rather than clearing up.
COVID did slow things down for us. Midway through our blackout fabric production (we use coated 100% blackout - this is true blackout, not the typical woven kind that stops 80-90% of light), there were COVID cases detected at the port in the city where our blackout supplier is located. We could have re-sourced a cheaper blackout fabric (lots available) but knew it just wasn't the right choice for our product. To make our fabric, you need to weave cloth, dye the cloth, then go through five layers of different coating materials to add full UV & light blocking, and sound & thermal insulation properties. It's a key part of the Sleepout Curtain and not something we could compromise on. The suppliers of this kind of blackout fabric are extremely rare but we can't imagine the Sleepout Curtain without it.
We're now well on our way through production. We expect to have the first half of our order on a vessel to Canada in late October. Ideally, we start shipping in November, but we are projecting December to be safer. The second half of our order will ship to Canada 2-3 weeks after the first.
Our freight partners have told us to expect 35-40 days at sea (longer than usual due to the current global shipping container shortage), and then we'll be able to ship your Sleepout Curtains to you after that.
We've done our best to try and make up on time everywhere we can. We've split the order so we can do less than container load (LCL) deliveries to start fulfilling faster, which increases our costs, but will get the products here faster. We've also expedited our shipping, so you will receive your Sleepout Curtains faster when we ship them out.
We're sorry for this. We've done our best to be as open, honest, and accurate as possible. We continue to look for ways to speed up delivery and we will be delivering all Sleepout Curtains globally.
We will keep you posted over the coming months while we continue with production, freight, and shipping.
Thank you again for all the support and understanding.
Production Update
We've seen some more samples coming off the production line and they are SO NICE - all the little details come together and it makes the Sleepout Curtain feel more real than ever before. Here's a photo:
Science of Sleep
In the meantime, we do have something else for you. Back in August, we heard your requests for more educational sessions about sleep and wellness. We told you we were restarting our Science of Sleep Q&A series. These are Q&As with top sleep researchers and our first session is scheduled for next Tuesday!
We'll feature Dr. Sara Nowakowsky about "Overcoming Insomnia". The session will feature a talk about insomnia and sleep trouble, plus evidence-based behavioral tips you can use to work through sleep trouble and hopefully notice a difference. Then we'll open the floor to questions!
Dr. Nowakowsky is a professor at the Baylor College of Medicine and has a practice where she uses behavioral therapies to treat patients with insomnia and sleep troubles daily. She's been gracious enough to come answer questions for all of us, and we're really looking forward to the discussion.
These sessions are free and open to anyone, but only 100 people can attend each. Sign up here if you'd like to attend the next session: https://overcoming-insomnia-w-dr-sara-nowakowsky.eventbrite.ca
You can learn more about Science of Sleep, our sleep education sessions with the world's top sleep researchers and practitioners, here.
We'd love your input: help us choose a topic for our next session!
Thank you again everyone. We're so grateful to be doing this with you and appreciate your understanding. We're available by email and on comments as always - reach out to us at hello@trysleepout.com.
